Beloved Elephant GeeNowl Passes Away at Elephant Valley Project

Phnom Penh: The Elephant Valley Project (EVP) announces the passing of GeeNowl, a cherished resident of the sanctuary, who passed away peacefully in her sleep last night. Recent updates had indicated a decline in her health, with the weekend revealing a significant weakening, an omen of what was to come. Yet, the finality of her departure has left a void in the hearts of her caregivers and all who knew her.

GeeNowl had been a part of EVP since 2008, transforming from a once troubled soul to the serene and gentle "grandma" known and loved by many. Her journey at EVP was marked by a significant transition, fueled by months of rehabilitation and the unwavering kindness of the team, ultimately leading to the adoption of a hands-off approach at the sanctuary. Observing her indulge in her natural behaviors within her habitat was a source of joy and a testament to her growth.

Her resilience since becoming noticeably frail last September has been an inspiring narrative of hope. GeeNowl defied the odds, continuing her exploration of the forest with unmatched vigor, and outliving other elephants like Sambo and Mae Nang. Her arrival at EVP signified not just a new chapter for her but also illustrated the transformative impact of compassion and dedicated care. The bond she formed with Gee Yul (Easy Rider) in 2009 was emblematic of her healing process, showcasing the power of companionship in overcoming the past.

The sanctuary facilitated a touching farewell between GeeNowl and Gee Yul, allowing for a final goodbye that was both poignant and serene. Gee Yul, after paying her respects, ventured off in search of bananas, reflecting the resilience and forward-moving spirit that GeeNowl herself had always embodied.

EVP is deeply grateful for the outpouring of support during these challenging times and takes solace in the knowledge that GeeNowl rests peacefully beside her friends, Mae Nang and Milot.
